After the 1-0 win over Chelsea there could be more good news on Tyneside over the coming days as Steve Bruce has hinted at potential transfers.
What did he say?
As usual, the Magpies’ boss has stuck to his line that reinforcements will only be made if they improve the group, which indicates that he is being careful with how he spends the budget available to him.
Added to that, the Chronicle report that Max Hagmy, the agent of potential signing Valentino Lazaro, visited St. James’ Park on Sunday and was given a tour of the ground by Steve Nickson before the visit of the Blues.
He will likely have been pleased with what he saw on and off the pitch and it seems that Bruce is positive about that transfer development, as well as others.
Speaking after the Chelsea match, as reported by the Chronicle, Bruce said:
“We are close to one or two things, we’ll try and let’s hope we can get them over the line. We are not going to bring players in for the sake of it, they have to improve the group.
“We might have to at left-back because it looks serious with Jetro [Willems].”
Indeed, left wing-back now has to be a priority for Bruce given both the Dutchman and Paul Dummett have been ruled out for the rest of the season, leaving Matt Ritchie as his only option to play there.

Newcastle may have widened the gap to the bottom three to seven points following the impressive win against Chelsea, but they were second best for large periods and there were worrying signs from the match.
Of course, the biggest drawback is the injury to Willems, who had been a stand-out player this year, but once again there were a lack of chances produced from open play, with just two shots on target.

The addition of Lazaro, if he does finalise a move, is hugely beneficial as he will provide competition for Miguel Almiron, DeAndre Yedlin and Javier Manquillo, since he is a versatile player who can play along the right-flank.
He also scored three goals and made seven assists for Hertha Berlin in the year prior to his move to Inter Milan last summer, which indicates his quality, and if Bruce can get that out of him the Magpies should improve going forward.
The fact Bruce isn’t satisfied with one reinforcement is positive and hopefully Mike Ashley will back him to bring in his first-choice replacement for Willems, as getting that position right is crucial.
With four goal contributions and 1.9 tackles per game, the 25-year-old provided important balance to the side and if the north-east outfit bring in a player who is adept going forward, they could have a very promising left-flank with Saint-Maximin also dazzling there, averaging 4.2 successful dribbles per game this term.
Meanwhile, one journalist has reported another intriguing transfer development that could signal good news for fans and the team alike.
