According to Football League World, Callum O’Dowda has his heart set on a move to Elland Road after rejecting three contract offers from Bristol City.
The Whites have been linked with a move for the winger this summer by The Mirror, via HITC, but they would be foolish to pass up on this opportunity if the Irishman wants the move.
What’s the story?
Leeds have been chasing the Bristol City man for some time now having been linked with him this summer and back in January.
The wide man has now made it clear that he wants to leave Ashton Gate by rejecting multiple contract offers, but he has also indicated that he wants a move to Elland Road.
Foolish to pass it up
Marcelo Bielsa has prioritised strengthening the wings in this upcoming transfer window, and O’Dowda is precisely the type of player he should be looking at bringing in.
The 24-year-old has proven himself to be Championship quality through a good goals and assists return during his time at Ashton Gate, and more importantly he wants to play for the club.
Loanees are all well and good, but if the Whites don’t go up next season, they could be left with a barebones squad for 2020/21 if they sign the likes of Helder Costa, Ryan Kent and Jack Harrison on loan.
A permanent deal is on the table for the Ireland international, and it is should be an opportunity that they grab with both hands. They need to focus on the long-term this summer by bringing in a player who can produce the goods beyond the end of the upcoming season, rather than just loanees who will return to their parent club after 12 months.
It’s a deal that makes sense on so many levels. He’s a proven Championship player, he wants to play for the club, and it would allow Leeds to plan for the future. Therefore, the Whites must act on his desire to play for the club and firm up their interest in him.
